In this May’s issue of JANE magazine (Take note that Jane Magazine is no longer in publication and the pictures have been removed) the editors decided to do something out of the ordinary, something that no magazine has done before – which was to feature real women with real breasts (absolutely NO boob jobs!). Their goal was to feature breasts au naturale in hopes that women would begin to feel better about their own bodies. In the year 2005, 364,610 women in the US went under the knife to have breast augmentation performed… with the exception of women who had breast implants as a result of mastectomies, i would presume that all of these women were part of the skyrocketing 70% of the women in this country who claim to dislike their breasts. I guess it doesn’t help much that fake boobs are everywhere, bouncing around in our faces like torpedoes without a purpose, not actually proving to be useful (unless you’re at a bar) but just there to intimidate small chested women. … continue reading this entry.

Hybrid is the New Beauty

The other day in class we talked about the rise of the hybrid beauty and how the ambiguity of nationality adds to how some women are perceived as ‘exotic’ and ‘mysterious’. The mystery of it all comes from the way someone can look at another person and see elements of different cultures but can’t really pinpoint where that person is from (curiosity) – this is what being exotic is about; the notion that you do not look like others and that people have to keep guessing.
